How Much Would you Pay for a Hair Loss Cure?

Been a while since the last poll. The two polls below are related to the price that you would be willing to pay for a hair loss cure. A “cure” means maintaining your existing hair as well as getting back the vast majority of your lost hair.

In the first poll below, you can assume a “session” of treatments to mean a few treatments (most likely scalp injections, but perhaps even genetic therapies) that are spread out across up to a year; and “permanent” to mean robust quality hair that lasts for at least a few decades. Note that the first poll question is about a one-time payment. In the second poll, however, the question is in relation to monthly payments for the rest of your life.

Update: I had to delete the polls in 2018 due to some plugin issues. The results of the two polls are summarized below.

How much would you be willing to pay for a one-time treatment session that permanently cures your hair loss and gives you a full head of hair?

Total responses = 3,329.

Up to $5000 = 607 (18.2%).

$5000 to $10,000 = 776 (23.3%)

$10,000 to $25,000 = 812 (24.4%)

$25,000 to $50,000 = 446 (13.4%)

$50,000 to $100,000 = 276 (8.3%)

$100,000 to $250,000 = 115 (3.5%).

$250,000 to $500,000 = 40 (1.2%)

$500,000 to $1,000,000 = 62 (1.9%)

Virtually any amount. I would go into lifetime debt if needed = 195 (5.9%).

If a cure for hair loss entails daily or weekly ingesting of pills or application of a topical solution to your scalp, how much would you be willing to pay for the treatment per month for the rest of your life?

Total responses = 2,640.

Up to $50 = 798 (30.2%).

$50 to $100 = 864 (32.7%)

$100 to $200 = 491 (18.6%)

$200 to $500 = 219 (8.3%)

$500 to $1,000 = 155 (5.9%)

Virtually any amount. I would go into lifetime debt if needed = 113 (4.3%).

  1. A one time treatment would be amazing and priceless (looking at those who said under $5000). I’m not saying I would go in debt for my lifetime but you have to consider the fact that would never have stress over your hair again – one time operation/ procedure etc… and poof all hair worries are gone. I doubt a treatment like that would ever come out (or in the near future) but really it is what people talk about when they say “cure”.

Some of these companies are saying that they will have treatments close to it – 3 to 5 years of relief and then repeat treatment sessions following that (even if it just means maintaining). I would consider that a “cure” for me but I think some have higher expectations. That with a one time HT, possibly 2 if you need it, would solve a lot of our problems.

    Cheers!

  2. 10000 -25000 no doubt. Thats like buying a honda civic. 4-5 years debit for a lifetime of no balding stress is worth it for me

  3. It depends if the hair after treatment should stick with me for atleast 8 to 10 years , than that will be a life time investment .

  4. They have to think men’s baldness in a different way… I always say that a permanent cosmetic solution.. Instead of worrying about dht bh… They should think in a different way.. Look at Elon musk… People had different perception for electric cars… But he proved them wrong… I wish he puts his mind in solving this issue… I swear if Iam a rich guy one day… I will dedicate all my money to mens well being..

  5. Farhan if you discovered the cure but it was a natural source which anyone could use, so pharma said they could make up to 10 billion and split with you all you have to do is not tell anyone the cure and you can have billions as well as constant supply to the hair loss cure. Would you take it or think, nah I’m going to help my fellow men!

  6. As for your comment about spending all your wealth trying to find the cure I doubt when push comes to shove you would. You would give up flash cars, chicks, designer clothes, a big house, vacations and drugs to be the jesus of the hair loss community. I mean I’m not saying you’d be selfish but realistically you could put billions into research etc just for it to be sucked up and not get anywhere when you could have enjoyed your money in other ways man.

    1. Well if I have billions i will come up atleast with a solution that will make us look normal… As I said a permanent cosmetic solution like fake breasts… No one cares they are fake and the results are beautiful….

  7. The good news is, when they do come up with a cure they’re gonna want a lot of people to buy it so while it’ll be expensive it’ll probably be more accessible than you think.

  8. Problem is that most men have no money, so what is the purpose of this poll? When baldness is a known sickness, then everybody who has a human care insurance has the possibility to be hairy again:) Having said that, i have voted!

  9. Now the companies like riken and shesido and others will come here and will say, look they are ready to pay all that money for the cure ! Then let’s make it expensive; )

    1. I thought the same damn thing. If they were going to charge less they would in all likelihood now increase thier cost!!! Hah!

  10. I wish I could say $100,000, but I would stop enjoying other things in life for a long time. I chose $50,000 because it’s more realistic, but I hope it’s $20,000 or under. :(

  11. I’d give up a testicle right about now for at least some good news that a company finally has something that’s proven to work and would be released soon. Seems like we can’t even get that. Merry Christmas everybody.

  12. If I was given the choice between a full thick norwood 1 for the rest of my life or a billion dollars, I’d choose the hair. No second thoughts whatsoever

    1. That’s messed up dude. A BILLION dollars would make you forget about your hair pretty quickly. I could see if you said million, I’d take the hair in that case hands down, but a bil? You could set up multiple generations of your closest friends and family members for life and then some. Don’t be crazy

      1. Ok it’s true that you can help others a great deal with that money I should have probably said if I were to keep the money to myself alone. Like, I’d rather have a full head of hair than live like a super rich person. I’m not really interested in becoming a billionaire anyway and I know I’ll still be confident when I shave my head but somehow I’ve always felt a healthy and good looking body is priceless. Plus those receded temples disgust me down to my core to look at. What can I say, I’m young and vain :P. But in the end we just have to make the most of our situation so..

    2. Ridiculous. How will a full hair benefit you later in life? How come some of us are bald, 40+ and …want 20yr olds? If you dont have confidence without hair you will still be a failure with hair.

  13. Merry xmas to all! @Admin I had a thought. With the misery of 2016 clearly affecting the readers on here who seem to be feeling like there’s nothing big happening in hair loss, how about we have a little pipeline tracker of the top most hopeful avenues of research and expected dates of achievements like tsuji, brotzu, replicel, histogen etc which were all big news and are now just in their trials quietly happening in the background? Just a thought! Perhaps for 2017…

      1. Thanks Curious this is exactly what I was thinking about :). We could replicate and add current expected commercialization dates and update is delayed etc. @Farhan I don’t believe replicel and histogen are ling gone. We never know the details of what’s actually going on and that’s relatively normal. I’m still hopeful and glad we have so many avenues of research in progress!

  14. People come here so often that they don’t even need a pipeline… Coming to treatments like histogen and replicel they are long gone… Tsuji might come up but still long way… Only thing that is close to something is Brotzu or some thing might happen with Jak…

  15. I feel like we should really be talking about what type of production cost to sale price multiplyer is acceptable. I think the only point at which I would be upset with the price of a treatment or cure is if whatever company jacks up the price by like 10,000%. Basically it would suck if Martin Shkreli or some douchebag equivalent got their hands on the cure and had a monopoly on the market place and then they could financially screw over anyone who wants hair.

    1. I would not think it’d be horribly expensive because they still need customers. I understand there are wealthy people but not every rich person is going to need/want it or even care to need and want it. They will have to make it available to the lay people to keep cash coming. Not saying it will be cheap but the majority should be able to pull it off. That is my opinion and I am but a Joe Schmo though.

      1. I am 52 years old,, using Avodart 0.5mg 1 at night for the past 3 years. I have baldness in my family, my brother, 54 is 60% bald. I have a full crown of healthy hair, no more shedding ever since, no libido/sexual decrease noticed. zero side effects. google the DHT process of male testosterone & all will make sense that Avodart blocks the DHT process which is the cause of hairloss. i resently started with Testosterone 100mg strenght, 2.5ml per week due to excessive sweating/hormone inbalance, i mean 52, what do you expect.. tested for hiperhydroses etc all tests negative. the testosterone supplement weekly is only but a extra bonus. plse feel free to contact me via email for more exact detail & smiles, i am a qualified chemist with some knowledge,, believe me i tried each & every product on the market, even hair transplant ops.. hope to hear from you for a can vote for AV0DART 100%

  16. It will be like anythig brought onto the market….

Initially it will be very high priced to skim off the top dollar from the market, then continually sink in price over the following years. My worry is that it isnt a one off, which will mean we can forget it ever really coming down in price.

On the plus side, it should result in a downturn in the price of HT surgery. And a good HT, some minox and some hair fibres will cost a fraction but look just as real as a new treatment.

    1. I hope we have the luxury of even worrying about price…like seriously ppl, theres no way it would be over 25k usd, so who cares.

        1. I doubt it, if it is though they may sit on it then in my opinion plus they said in the interview they want to get it relatively affordable for everyone.(or something along those lines I forget) Nobody should have to take out a car loan for hair, and I hope nobody would……guys…

  17. What about CRISPR? I know this gnome editing is going to explode soon. Any ideas if this might lead to a permenent cure?
