ARTAS Robot Recipient Site Creation

The increasingly popular ARTA FUE hair transplant robot has to date only been used for the purposes of automated extraction of hair from the donor region at the back of a patient’s scalp.

ARTAS Robot Recipient Site Creation

However, in the near future, ARTAS will also be used to create recipient sites. And thereafter, to insert grafts into those recipient sites. i.e., within a few more years, we might be able to witness fully automated hair transplants.

The renowned hair transplant surgeon Dr. Robert Bernstein has a detailed page on robotic FUE hair transplantation on his website. Towards the end of that page, he states the following:

“Bernstein Medical is beta testing the ARTAS System for use in recipient site creation. Dr. Bernstein introduced this new technology at the Restoration Robotics user meeting in California on February 8, 2014. The capability should be available for general use by the fall of 2014”.

This is a ground breaking development that might be realized a bit sooner than I was expecting. Dr. Bernstein is a medical consultant to Restoration Robotics (now Venus Treatments), and also an investor in the company according to his website.

8th World Congress for Hair Research

I try to cover all of the biennial World Congress for Hair Research events on this blog. The 8th World Congress for Hair Research 2014 (WCHR2014) will take place in South Korea from May 14th through May 17th of this year.

After the US, South Korea is probably the world’s second most interesting country when it comes to hair loss cure and treatment related research and development. Make sure to check out my page on hair loss research around the world. In third place is Japan, which is home to Shiseido, the manufacturer of the popular Adenosine based Adenovital shampoo.

The full program and schedule can be found on this page:

WCHR2014 Program at a Glance

This list confirms my feeling that a disproportionate portion of the world’s hair loss related research is now occurring in Asia. The enigma that is Dr. Nigam has two abstracts accepted and will be presenting the one titled “Application of Tissue Engineering in Hair Transplant to Reduce and/or Eliminate post Follicular Unit Hair Transplant Micro Scaring or White Dots at Donor Scalp.”

Too bad that he will not present the other abstract that he submitted on donor doubling, as that is definitely the one that is more interesting to most of us. Nevertheless, scarless FUE would be ground breaking too.

The list of invited speakers is also dominated by Asian researchers:

WCHR2014 Invited Speakers

I am surprised that Dr. Takashi Tsuji and Dr. Sung-Jan Lin are not on the list of invited speakers. The most well known western researchers such as Angela Christiano, George Cotsarelis, Colin Jahoda and Kevin McElwee are all invited. Ken Washenik is a notable absentee from the invite list.
