Shiseido Discusses Replicel Technology

The below two superb videos from Japan’s Shiseido were shared by its Canadian partner Replicel three weeks ago. I delayed embedding them here until they had English subtitles (which they now do if you click on CC in the lower right corner of the videos). Some of the visuals are very interesting and instructive. In my opinion, if final clinical trials this year work out as expected, Shiseido will be able to bring this technology to fruition far more rapidly and easily in comparison to Replicel due to two main reasons:

  1. Japan’s newer much more friendlier regulations governing regenerative medicine and stem cell research.  Stage 3 clinical trials will no longer be required in Japan.
  2. Shiseido’s drastically larger size and funding availability in comaprison to Replicel.  According to wikipedia, Shiseido is the largest cosmetics firm in Japan, and the fourth largest cosmetics firm in the world.

The second video covers the work of Dr. Takashi Tsuji and of Dr. Manabu Ohyama (who it seems might be working for Shiseido).

  1. Can someone please clarify this:
In the 1st video @11.20 mark, why does it say that they’re hoping to have clinical trials for practical use in 2018? I thought they were doing phase II.

And later on, Dr.Sato says this won’t work for someone who is bald. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of this whole cure?

    1. He means it won’t work on someone who doesn’t even have hair on the back of his head. They need a few follicles to cultivate, but even Norwood 7’s have that much so don’t worry about that.

    2. Yea that wouldn’t make much sense unless they mean completely bald because then they wouldn’t have any donor cell’s to extract and replicate. That’s the only think I can think of.

  2. When this treatment will be available in Japan / or Europe?
I would pay thousands and thousands of euros for this treatment if it works.

    Greetings. Again great blog.
We are getting closer for sure.

  3. from what i understand this ONE TIME TREATMENT will basically CURE your EXISTING hairs from ever falling out( using the cells from the back of the head where hair is immune to dht).. basically it makes your thinning hair terminal? and makes it immune to ever falling.. but indeed if your bald it won’t generate nearly enough hairs… btw people. 2018 might be released in japan… 2020 minimum in the rest of the world then add the possibly HUGE cost of the procedure and basically it is useless for anyone other than a teenager or kids or people who havn’t even started losing their hair yet…

  4. Shiseido will first have this technology on the market only in Japan in about 3 more years. Across the rest of the world will take another 7 to 8 more years due to Phase III having to be completed. Price is unknown at this point but I am sure it is not going to be cheap. Especially if you have a very high Norwood. The only way to get this done faster is to book a flight to Japan in 2018. Otherwise, you will be waiting much longer. And to those wondering this does appear to finally be a cure for baldness. Their program is called “hair regeneration”.

  5. If you have a receeding hairline will it make new hairs grow in and fill the gap or just stop you loosing more hair?????????

  6. To everyone that is asking themselves ‘Why not now, why 2018?!?’, the reason is that they still have to run the phase 2b trials in regards of dosage and other practical elements of using this technology as a treatment.

Also, I doubt this will be extremely expensive, as the chronic Tendinosis treatment will be 3000-5000 $ and it is basically the same thing being done. (This is only a guess)

And finally, will this be a cure or just another treatment? Either way It will be revolutionary. As far as we know this could be the very basic, primitive way of treating hair loss via regenerative medicine…the ‘scalp flap’ of autologous cell treatments, if you will.

Oh and btw, this blog is much better than the forums, it has more information and a lot less negativity. Great job you’re doing here admin, keep up the good work. :D

  7. Looks like the Admin Squeeks in with a what is a marginal cure in 2018. Question is does he maintain the website and await for a True Full cure? I’ll leave that to him to answer.

Facing facts, a real cure is 20-25 years away. But something that helps to improve current hair is a step forward.

    1. Barring any unforeseen major health or family problem, I intend to keep updating this blog through 2020.

  8. Can someone tell me if this technology will be able to awaken all the dead follicles? Cause in the video it looks like it’s possible to get all the hair we had before we started to get bad if we still have a bit of hair in the back of the scalp to have the biopsy done.
I mean, if it’s supposed to bring dormant follicles back, it can be done to all of them? Am I wrong? Can someone tell me?

  9. To Rich,

The main issue as it is said in the video is that there is only 50 researchers in the field of hair loss cure vs 10 000 for cancer -which is of course is major one for mankind.

So if Shiseido , the fourth largest cosmetics company in the world, is investing in that field, this will eventually entail other companies to be involved. So saying a real cure is 20-25 years away is a bit pessimistic. Things can change very fast.

    Regards.

    To Admin,

Many thanks to Admin for the 2 videos. The best I’ve ever seen about Replicel. Glad to know that you’ll be around till 2020. We keep hope alive.

  10. In the video was said that you need to have undamaged follicles. I want to ask what if someone had Hair Transplantation does the HT damages the existing follicles on accepting area?

  11. My point is what if I made hair transplantation and I want to use this method for hair restoration later? Would it be possible? My follicles will not be damaged with hair transplantation or they will because with hair transplantation canals are opened where the grafts are placed, so I would like to ask if follicles remain undamaged (those follicles that are not producing hair when later need to be treated with this new method).

  12. The guy won the Nobel Prize for the research that is driving this technique. This is not an infomercial quack. The Nobel Prize people!
